Le Mulet Rouge® (French for “the red mule”) is located east of
Fiddletown in northern Amador
County. It takes its
name from the road on which it is located and the road gets its name from Red
Mule Ranch where red mules once roamed.
Two of the mules, Jim and John, are on the Le Mulet Rouge®
label. Jim and John came to Fiddletown from Hollywood where they starred as the
breakaway team in western movies. Jim and John were broken of the habit of
“bolting” and then used to pull a wagon across the United States during the 1976
bicentennial wagon train trek. We have been told that the west wouldn’t have
been settled without mules. Horses weren’t strong enough to pull wagons and
donkeys were too small to carry large loads. So we are proud to honor the
animal that helped settle the west!
The
rest of our label shows Le Mulet Rouge® winery and vineyard, or at least the artist’s rendition
of what Le Mulet Rouge®
will look like when the vines come to fruit. Sutter Creek Wine Tasting is
presently the only location where you can find our wines.
Collector’s Item

We
are pleased to offer our Le Mulet Rouge® friends a poster commissioned to reflect the spirit of
our brand name. The posters are 19”x28” and are numbered and signed by the
well-known French poster artist J-P Got. The posters were printed at the
historic Imprimerie Centrale print shop in Bordeaux.
We
believe these posters are destined to become a collector’s item. We offer
them now for $35 each, plus shipping and handling. Send us your name and
address and a check for $40, payable to Le Mulet Rouge® at 16915 Red Mule Road, Fiddletown, CA 95629-9711 or email
us where to send the poster and we will invoice you. Posters are also
available at our tasting room in Sutter Creek (see tasting room). You can
request that the Le Mulet Rouge®
winemaker also sign the poster and he will be happy to oblige.
These poster are quite
beautiful and will make a great and unique gift for yourself or for another
enophile! We urge you not to delay ordering your poster because only 500 were
printed and signed and they will not be reprinted.
Who are
we?
Jack and Sheila Feichtner are
the owners of Le Mulet Rouge®. They came to commercial winemaking after careers in other
fields. Jack has a background in science which he has put to good use as a
vintner. He holds several degrees in physics and, prior to starting Le Mulet
Rouge®,
was a research scientist at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh,
PA and Lockheed-Martin in Palo Alto, CA. Sheila has a background in
higher education administration and project management which she has been
able to draw on in managing the business. What began as an interest in
amateur winemaking in Pennsylvania started
to take shape in the 1990s with formal classwork at UC-Davis and an
apprenticeship at Clos La Chance winery near Saratoga,
CA. Le Mulet Rouge®
is a work in progress that the owners anticipate will fuel the growing demand
for Amador County wines.
Le Mulet Rouge recently received a certificate for
demonstrating outstanding committment to the environment, the community, and
high quality grapes and wine from the California Sustainable Winegrowing
Alliance, the Wine Institute, and the California Association of Winegrape
Growers.
